KEEPERS OF THE GRIMOIRE
Keepers of the Grimoire, or Keepers for short, are Rodalers that have managed to get their hands on a magical Grimoire. People from all ranks can find one, but it is generally easier for knights and up to come into possession of one, due to connections or it being passed down by their parents. Your Grimoire is magically bound to you. If you lose it, it is stolen or it is destroyed*, you forget all the spells. Currently, characters can't find a Grimoire yet. If they don't start out as Keepers, they won't be a Keeper until the lore is updated.
* Grimoires require a blood binding ritual. You need to drip blood on the cover of the Grimoire three days in a row at midnight to bind a Grimoire to you. This procedure needs to be repeated every year, starting on the anniversary day of getting your Grimoire. If you lose your Grimoire, you are able to perform the spells in the Grimoire until the Rebinding. After you were unable to rebind, you will lose the ability to perform the spells. You can also lose the ability if someone finds the Grimoire before your rebinding day and performs a binding ritual of their own. The Grimoire will then have a new master.
Characters that are made as Keepers start out with having the first chapter mastered, unless they have only recently received their Grimoire in their history. Higher ranking characters, such as knights, bannerets, warlord and Marshals might start with a higher level. Depending on the history, I might ask some follow up questions to determine at what level they start out.
The Grimoire consists of 5 chapters:
NOVICE CHAPTER: Easy to learn. It takes 50 posts* to recite the spells without Grimoire. Here you will find the following spells:
- Novice firebolt: a spark of fire, not capable of dealing serious damage.
- Close message: telepathically send a message to someone (max 10 feet/3 meters).
BEGINNER CHAPTER: After you've studied the novice chapter, you can move on. This chapter takes 100 posts* of training. It contains the following spells:
- Beginner firebolt: a spark of fire, capable of dealing 1st degree burn damage.
- Average message: telepathically send a message to someone (max 33 feet/10 meters).
ADVANCED CHAPTER: To master this chapter, you will need to fully master the previous two chapters, and 100 posts*. It contains the following spells:
- Advanced firebolt: a spark of fire, capable of dealing 2nd degree burn damage.
PROFICIENT CHAPTER: Only a very few people have mastered this chapter (DM or message Aenwyn if you have an idea for a character that masters it). This chapter requires another 150 posts*. It contains the following spells:
- Portal: create a portal to a familiar place.
- Minor invisibility: stay invisible for three posts.
- Lesser lightning bolt: a spart of lightning, shocks the target upon collision.
- Lock: magically lock a door, it cannot be opened by force.
EXPERT CHAPTER: Nobody has been able to master this chapter yet. It requires TBD posts.
- Expert firebolt: a spark of fire, capable of dealing 3rd degree burn damage.
- Invisibility: stay invisible for six posts.
- Detect thoughts: read the thoughts of the person you're talking to.
- Greater lightning bolt: a spark of lightning, shocks the target upon collision and leaves them stunned for one post.
- Skeleton key: open any locked door with this spell, even those with Lock.
The chapters are to be studied in order. You can not learn a chapter if you have not learnt the previous one. The spells stack, so you add spells to your knowledge by studying more. Note that while there is an estimate on how long it takes someone to master a chapter, that it is not a guarantee that they will be able to master it. Most people find themselves stuck around chapter 2 or 3.
* Posts count from the moment your character gets their hand on a Grimoire. If your character manages to get one, reach out to me with the thread and your post count at that time. e.g. if your character has 75 posts when they get a Grimoire, they have mastered the novice chapter when they have 125 posts. When the character has 225 posts, they have mastered the second chapter, etc.
If you have ideas for spells, feel free to reach out!
